The MA in Photography & Visual Language course is the one of the very few postgraduate programmes in Photography existing in Greece, and the only that is based on the combination of Photography and Visual Language.

Its philosophy encourages experimentation with other visual media. As such, it provides for an extended study of the photographic language, its techniques, expressive consequences and progressive conceptualizations on how to use Photography as a communication and visualization tool for expressing multiple possibilities of culture and reality.

This course refers to graduates of Photography, Fine Arts, Visual design and Cinema as well as professionals of related fields such as: Art Direction, Film Direction, Video Production, Fashion Photography, Documentary Photography, Advertising Photography etc. wishing to develop their professional knowledge as well as their creativity, while acquiring an interdisciplinary understanding of the audiovisual media.

Aims of the Programme

It aims to enable you to demonstrate all aspects of excellence, evolving your practical and technical expertise, expanding your understanding of the visual language and enabling you to develop a strong and sustainable artistic practice, develop as professional Photographers and Visual Designers, able to contextualise it and communicate it effectively.

It provides you with a learning environment in which you can combine creative, professional and strategic knowledge with research skills and develop a solid understanding of Photography in the visual industry, incorporating contemporary technologies. Its Philosophy and content allow you to extend your boundaries through critical analysis, experimentation, research and creative exploration of contemporary image perspectives so as to be able to produce innovative ideas and high quality photographic and/or visual productions.

The structure and content of this programme allows you to build on your knowledge and skills by giving you the opportunity to understand photography as an expanded visual medium, with blending different possibilities of visual expression and practice, so that, as graduates, you will be able to play an active role in the creative and commercial industry of Photography and Visual media.

Programme structure

The programme is comprised of six (6) modules, developed in 3 semesters, that lead to 180 credits.

The MA in Photography & Visual Language course is extended to various fields related to Photography:
Photography as Photography as creative expression, medium of communication and its relation to other visual media, contemporary means of presentation (festivals, galleries, museums, publishers etc), Photography and new technologies of the image, managing photography (Management, Budgeting, Communication & Marketing), Legal issues (ethics and copyrights).

As a result, students will acquire a wide spectrum of knowledge, on the various fields of Photography, so as to be able to select the topic of their Main project.

 

The programme can be completed in two different modes of study:

Full Time | One year full time – 12 month duration
Attendance required is three afternoons per week during the winter semester, two afternoons per week during the spring semester, and personal meetings with your supervisor for the completion of your Main Project during the summer semester.

Part Time | Two year – 21 months duration
Attendance required is the same as the full time option with regards to modules followed, however double time is given to complete your projects. In this case, one graduates one year later, in relation to the full time mode.
